Cisco router causes Beijing Internet incident
The incident that caused 200,000 broadband users offline is still under investigation. US Cisco System Inc, the router provider for the Beijing Branch, did not offer the concrete reason Wednesday, according to Beijing Morning Post.
At 2:35pm on July 12, the Beijing Netcom Branch's ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) and LAN (Local-Area Network) with more than 2 million subscribers were suddenly off line in the great part, and the branch poured a great number of men and materials into the emergence repair. At about 3:30pm, the Internet began to be normal gradually. The accident affected about 200,000 net citizens.
As for the most serious technical accident happened in the past several years, the branch has not issued a formal statement. However its responsible official made it clearly Wednesday that the accident was not caused by wrong doings of its workers as some said, instead by Internet router. But he did not throw light on the technical reason.
"Similar service accidents will not happen in the future'', said the official at the same time. "The large-scale off-line will not occur again and users can rest assured''.
By Wednesday's afternoon, Cisco System Inc (China) Network Technology Ltd had not given clear explanation concerning the accident.
"Cisco is locating the reason with China Netcom Company Beijing Branch to ensure that the Internet will be in smooth operation in the future,'' said a Cisco public relations manager Wednesday. "Currently, Beijing's broadband services have returned to normal. Cisco has no more information to disclose''. (Subscribers) should wait for a formal bulletin from the Beijing branch.
The accident has evoked deep reflections in the cyber business circles. From the Internet start, most of the routers China Netcom Company used in its key networks have been Cisco's, including hardware and software. Wednesday, Sina.com made an online survey on the accident. More than 70 per cent of net citizens believed that China's telecommunications departments' overuse of foreign products in their key equipment will bring along safety problems.
The incident has also drawn concerns from experts about the security problems of China Internet.
The US Department of Commerce once said that it would continue to reserve its supervision right over Internet domain name root servers, hinting that the US will continue to hold the final rule over the global Internet. The US attitude has broken down the global illusion about the Internet security, said Qian Hualin, the only Chinese member in the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and a research fellow with the Internet Network Information Center under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wednesday.
If ICANN is responsible for the "US government alone'', and if there happens a fierce conflict between the US and other countries, it will mean that the Internet of the rival nations will probably lose security.
