Sandra 2010 Memory Bandwidth
Benchmark Results: Despite the AMD Athlon II X2 255 running memory at 1600MHz it fell short of the AMD Phenom II 940 BE running DDR2 at 1066MHz.
PCMark Vantage
Benchmark Results: Beating out its predecessor, the Athlon II X2 240, the Athlon II X2 255 is still limited to 2 cores unlike the other processors I have benchmarked. The AMD Athlon II X2 255 fared rather well in PCMark Vantage. Perhaps not as strong as I would have like to have seen, but overall a solid performance.
3DMark Vantage
Benchmark Results: 3DMark Vantage results were not great when compared to all the quad core processors, though they were not horrible, either. It was somewhat expected since the CPU tests rely on multiple cores and threads to perform the calculations. Being limited to 2 cores, we took a hit in performance.
POV-Ray
Benchmark Results: Again, we run into an issue when running a program that will utilize multiple cores. Being limited to two cores definitely caused an increase in time to render the photo. Though when comparing the results of only running one core, the AMD Athlon II X2 255 took the least amount of time to render the image.
Photodex Proshow 4.0
Benchmark Results: The results aren't the strongest showing that the Athlon II X2 255 has had, though it is an improvement over the Athlon II 240. Photodex Proshow 4.0 is able to utilize multiple threads and being limited to the two threads of a dual core processor hurt the completion time of the project.
Cinebench 10
Benchmark Results: The AMD Athlon II X2 255 was faster than most of the processors when comparing single core results. Although, again it did take much longer in the smp results due to only being a dual core processor
World in Conflict
Benchmark results: The AMD Athlon II X2 255 had a solid performance in World in Conflict. The Athlon II X2 255 had comparable results in the low image quality settings and only slightly slower with the settings at maximum. It did win out over the Athlon II X2 240, a boost of 300MHz provided a more noticeable difference in World in Conflict than the two core difference between the Athlon II X2 255 and the Athlon II X4 635.
Colin McRae: DiRT 2
Benchmark Results: The AMD Athlon II X2 255 fell a bit short on performance in Colin McRae: DiRT 2. It became apparent to me that DiRT 2 is a processor reliant game; even the lower frequency quad cores had a significant advantage here.
Overclocking
AMD Athlon II X2 255
Overclocking greatly varies due to what hardware is being used and who is doing the overclocking. Always remember that no two pieces of hardware will perform the same, so our results will differ from what you might be able to get
.
Power Consumption
Benchmark Results: The AMD Athlon II X2 255 has an idle power draw nearly identical to that of the other AM3 processors. Under full load it draws approximately half the difference of the Athlon II X4 635. That goes to show AMD keeps the power draw fairly consistent per core
AMD Athlon II X2 255 = $74.99
