AMD Opens Next-gen Processor Design Facility in Colorado
Researching quad-core and beyond
AMD this week announced the opening of a new processor design and development facility located in Fort Collins, Colorado. The new facility is called the Mile High Design Center and will be designing next-generation processor families. Contrary to what some have said, the new MHDC center is not a fab location and will only be used to design and research new processor technologies. Earlier this year, AMD confirmed a new fab location in New York, costing roughly $3.5 billion. According to AMD:
AMD was welcomed into the Fort Collins community at a recent reception hosted by the Northern Colorado Economic Development Corporation and the Fort Collins Area Chamber of Commerce, and attended by elected officials, academics, business and community leaders. At the reception, AMD demonstrated its commitment to the community with a contribution to the Ft. Collins Discovery Science Center.
No exact details on what the new MHDC facility will be researching exactly, but AMD is currently in the process or readying its quad-core technology lineup for 2007.
This week at IDF Fall 2006, Intel announced two new fab facilities: Fab 32 in Arizona and Fab 28 in Israel. The two new fabs will cost Intel roughly $9 billion to build and will both be focusing on producing 45nm products. Intel CEO Paul Otellini mentioned during a key note that several 45nm designs will be available coming 2007. In terms of next-geneartion research, Intel also announced this week a big push into tera-flop computing.
