How many computers can Iconnect for program sharing?Windows 2000 Professional, theoperating system used by theGates Library Computer, has anupper limit of 10 sharedconnections. If you want to shareprograms with more than 10computers, you’ll need to usemore than one Gates LibraryComputer. How can I tell whether mycomputers are already set up?Check by logging on to your GatesLibrary Computer as exec andopening My Network Places. If youcan access your other computersthrough My Network Places, youdon’t need to complete theprocedures in this section.10

Repeat this procedure on any Windows 95/98 computers with which youwant to share programs.Sharing ProgramsWhy Do ThisYou can use the Gates Library Computer to enhance the computing resources inyour library by sharing donated programs with all your public access computersthrough your network. If your library already has or plans to obtain additionalpublic access computers, you can use the Gates Library Computer to share theOffice Suite (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, PhotoDraw, andPublisher), Encarta Reference Library, and MapPoint.Library patrons benefit from the additional availability of these programs, and you can get more out of your older computers by sharing Gates LibraryComputer programs with them, because the amount of hard disk space requiredfor sharing programs is significantly less than for using them locally.Figure 10-17. Using program sharing, you can provide access to programs on the GatesLibrary Computer from your other public access computers.SHARE:To make files on onecomputer, usually a server, available for access by othercomputers on the network.LOCAL:A computer useddirectly by a person, as opposed toa remote computer accessedthrough a network.10

179PART V: GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR COMPUTERSharing Programs with Your Other ComputersKey ConceptsSharing Folders and FilesResources stored on a computer are not automatically available to other comput-ers, even on the same network. To access folders and files on your Gates LibraryComputer using other computers in your library, you must specifically allow theother computers to read the folders and files. Doing so is called sharing. Sharedresources are visible to other computers through My Network Places (Windows2000) or Network Neighborhood (Windows 95/98/NT).You can assign different levels of access to network users, so people usingother computers can’t change or delete folders and files on your Gates LibraryComputer. When you share programs using the Gates Library Computer, youassign read-only access to the user account people will use to access programsthrough the network. That way, patrons cannot accidentally or intentionally alteror remove the programs you’re sharing.Accessing Shared Folders and FilesTo access shared resources through the network, you must log on to a useraccount recognized by the computer where the shared resources are stored. Ifyou try to access a computer through the network while logged on to the localcomputer as a user not recognized by the computer you are attempting to access, either you are prompted to enter a user name and password for that computer oryou are denied access. If you log on to the local computer as a user that also hasan account on the computer with the shared resource, you can access the sharedresource without having to enter any additional information. When you use your other public computers to access shared programs onthe Gates Library Computer, you can either log on to the other public computeras a user already recognized by the Gates Library Computer, such as all, or youcan add a user account to the Gates Library Computer with the user name andpassword patrons normally use in your library. In this scenario, patrons accessingshared programs on the Gates Library Computer do not need to enter an addi-tional user name and password.Installing Shared Programs LocallyShared programs must be installed locally for you to run them. Although thecomputer using the program through the network accesses most of the filesrequired to run the program directly from the computer where they are stored, some files are copied to the hard disk drive of the computer where the program isused. These files include shortcuts to the program on the Start menu, files thatstart the program, and files that manage communication between the computers. To share programs on the Gates Library Computer with other computers, you must install the programs on each computer where they will be used. Theinstallation process for programs to be shared is similar to the installationprocess for programs to be used on the computer where their files are stored.cCan I use one of the useraccounts already on the GatesLibrary Computer for sharingprograms with other computerson the network? Yes. Have yourpatrons log on to your othercomputers as all, and skip theprocedure for adding a user. Then why would I want to add auser? If patrons in your library arerequired to log on to yourcomputers using a particular username and password, they’ll beable to access shared programsonly if you add a user account withthe same user name andpassword to your Gates LibraryComputer.READ-ONLY A CCESS:Permission to read a file or use aprogram only. A user with read-only access may not change ordelete the file or program.10

PART V: GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR COMPUTERSharing Programs with Your Other Computers180BeforeYou BeginAdd the Other Computers to the NetworkUse the procedures in the previous section,“Adding Computers to YourNetwork,”before sharing programs.Obtain LicensesTo share programs from your Gates Library Computer, you must obtain licensesfrom the software manufacturer for each computer people will use to access theprograms. Licenses for sharing programs are available by request as part of yourgrant. You must request these licenses from Bill & Melinda Gates FoundationLogistics Support within six months of receiving your grant award. The grantincludes licenses for sharing a limited set of programs. You are responsible forobtaining licenses for sharing any other programs, including programs you addto the Gates Library Computer.ProceduresFollow the procedures in this section to set up your Gates Library Computer toshare programs with other public access computers in your library. After youcomplete these procedures, patrons will be able to access the programs sharedfrom the Gates Library Computer from other computers. You can use individualprocedures within this section for other purposes, but to establish program shar-ing, you must complete all the procedures in this section.✓To Add a User to the Gates Library Computer for Program Sharing (Optional)To Share the Folders Containing ProgramsTo Install Shared Programs To Create Desktop Shortcuts for Shared ProgramsIf your library does not require patrons to log on to your computers using a par-ticular user name and password, you don’t need to add a user to the GatesLibrary Computer for program sharing. Skip to“To Share the FoldersContaining Programs”later in this chapter. If patrons are required to log on toyour library’s computers using a particular user name and password, you mustuse this procedure to add a user account with the same user name and passwordto your Gates Library Computer.Follow this procedure to add a user to the Gates Library Computer for shar-ing programs from your Gates Library Computer to other computers in yourlibrary. Even if you’re sharing programs to more than one computer, you need toadd only one user to the Gates Library Computer. Patrons can log on to the sameuser account on every computer with which you share programs, as long as theuser is recognized by both the computer used to access programs and the com-puter where the programs are stored.USER A CCOUNT:OnWindows computers, a computeridentity with specific accessprivileges to resources on thecomputer, including resources onthe local computer’s hard disk driveand remote resources on networkedcomputers.10

    1- Peer to Peer
    2-Server Client

Maximum 10 PCs
XP or 2000 etc

Server Client
Windows Server or Windows NT
Unlimited PCs

Windows OS
