We have a number of PCs with Ethernet adapters, one Ethernet L2/L3 switch with 24 ports, and one router with one Ethernet port. The requirement is to split up the PCs into two separate LANs where each LAN will have a different subnet. LAN_1 will have a subnet 192.168.1/29 and LAN_2 will have 172.16/28. LAN_1 and LAN_2 will need to speak to each other. Requirements and questions follow.
Requirements:
Network diagram displaying the physical connectivity of all the hardware.
Network diagram displaying the logical connectivity where the separate LANs and IP addresses are depicted.
Questions:
How many PCs can each LAN have provided LAN_1 and LAN_2 need to speak to each other?
Do we need tagging? Why?
What will be the tagging situation of all the ports, i.e. PC ports, switch ports, and router?
Do we need any static or dynamic routing? Why?
What are the entries of the ARP table on each device?
What are the entries of the forwarding database table on the switch?
Bonus question:
Can we build this network by removing the router from the picture? How?
