PMI has recognized the need to provide a more comprehensive collection of professional certifications and a framework for project management practitioners to follow as we continue to strive to develop ourselves and our discipline. To help us with the challenges of continuous professional development, PMI has launched the Career Framework for Practitioners to help PMI members and credential holders develop a path to career advancement. The framework provides a career ladder which includes skills and competencies, assessments, a set of comprehensive job descriptions, and professional development activities "aimed at strengthening weaker skill sets and knowledge areas".
PMI also continues to expand the set of available certifications beyond the PMP (Project Management Professional), which remains the best known and most widely recognized certification for project managers. The current set of certifications includes the:
* PMP (Project Management Professional): to recognize demonstrable knowledge and skill in directing and leading project teams.
* CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management): to acknowledge understanding of the basic knowledge, processes, and terminology.
* PgMP (Program Management Professional): to acknowledge experience, skill, and performance in the management of multiple inter-related projects.
* PMI-SP (PMI-Scheduling Professional): to recognize specialized expertise and knowledge in developing and managing project schedules
* PMI-RMP (PMI-Risk Management Professional): to recognize individuals providing expertise in the specialized areas of assessing and identifying project risks and preparing plans to mitigate threats and make the most of opportunities.
The latest certification, the PMI-Risk Management Professional is our focus in this article. The PMI-RMP Handbook says that candidates for this certification "can assess and identify project risk, be able to mitigate threats and capitalize on opportunities, and should be able to communicate risks to the project team." The new global certification is recognition of the continued evolution of the project management profession and the increasing complexity of projects, particularly as they occur in a global and virtual context. The PMI-RMP certification was launched in late June 2008.
The PMI-RMP certification follows a similar pattern for qualification, testing, award, and sustaining the certification to other PMI certifications. Once a candidate has begun an application, he or she has 90 days in which to complete and submit that application. The application provides the documentation of the candidate's education and experience. Just like the PMP, the PMI-RMP is available to those with a bachelor's degree or higher, or a high school diploma, associate's degree, or global equivalent. The table below summarizes the hours of experience and education required for this certification.
