NATIVE QUAD-CORE
Intel, currently, sell quad core chips containing two separate dies. If either die has a flaw, it is sold as a Core Solo and not put in a dual-die package.
AMD, however, are going to be making single-die quad-core chips. Selling three-core versions allows them to make use of the ones with a flaw in one core. This should help keep their yields high (and thus their costs relatively low), since it means that they can sell flawed chips almost irrespective of where the flaw is, just marking it down as a cheaper part.

Technically AMD can easily make microprocessors with odd amount of processing engines thanks to its DirectConnect architecture.

Going beyond the gut reaction, this is a surprisingly good move on AMD's part since it's one that Intel can't match. Intel is still reliant on the aging Front-Side-Bus architecture and has no direct-connect system put on the market. The result is that Intel can only do dual core and quad core chips on their architecture.

With our advanced multi-core architecture, AMD is in a unique position to enable a wider range of premium desktop solutions

This is also a product that Intel won't be able to easily match just yet. Intel's road map for the next six months or so calls for packaged quad-core chips, two dual-core chips put together into the same package. Intel's unlikely to switch to a design that could accomodate three cores until later in 2008 when it releases the Nehalem generation of chips.
